Hand Hewn Beams
Hand-crafted
beauty combined with rugged durability, in sizes ranging from 4"x4"
to 12"x12"
and sometimes beyond! Species vary from Pine,
Hemlock and Spruce in the softwoods to Elm, Ash, Beech and a bit of Oak
in the hardwoods. We will have pulled any protruding nails and hardware,
trimmed the ends to only solid timber and eliminated any visual deficiencies.
We treat each timber as if were going into our very own living room or
den. When temperatures permit (above freezing) we pressure wash all timber
before we ship it out.
Original Sawn Timber
These timbers are virtually the same as the hewn except they were squared
at a sawmill nearly 100 years ago. The coarse circular saw marks are still
very evident in the wood, giving the wood that authentic ruggedness. A
handsome choice!
Barn
Board
There's nothing like century-old barn boards, originally sawn from virgin
timber to evoke the feeling of charm of days gone by. The variety of boards
and their many uses are almost too vast to mention, but to name a few,
we have:
Exterior Barn Siding
These boards come in various colors. The most common being Natural Grey.
The range in shades of grey depend on which side of the barn it came from,
how long it had been on the barn, local weather conditions, etc., from
dark charcoal to silvery grey.
Red Board
This would be a result of being 'painted' with a concoction of old milk,
iron oxide and blood. Again the shades very from light to dark. Makes
a striking impression both indoors and out. All of our original siding
products are very much capable of being used again as siding on your home
or outbuildings. They've already stood the test of time!
Brown Board
This product spent it's entire life inside the barn, never having been
exposed to the elements it retains a deep golden brown color all it's
own. Only time can create this effect know as patina. It is an excellent
choice for flooring, furniture or even an interior wainscoting wall application.
A very versatile product. It could even be run into custom historic moldings
such as base board, crown moulding, window and door casings and the such.
Possibilities are virtually endless.
Threshing Floor
No other board product exudes character like this one! Originating as
the floor in the main bay of the barn, over 100 years of horse and wagon
traffic have given these two-inch thick planks a rugged yet almost hand
rubbed texture that cannot be duplicated today, even with the most advanced
equipment - only time. With a slight pass on the planer, these boards
can be turned into a floor or table top that will take your breath away!
Roof Boards
Just as they sound, these boards were the original sheathing on the roof
of the barn. The old cedar shakes would have been nailed directly to these.
As time went by, the original shingles were replaced by the large sheets
of tin we still see on barns today. These roof boards have the deepest
hues of brown and gold in the barn. They are often very wide and still
as thick as they were when they were sawn a century or more ago. There
is a limited application for these though - the original little nails
used to apply the shakes are still embedded in one face. It would not
be practical to remove them all. Most people use this product as a false
barn ceiling look on the interior of their barn/home conversion.
